I really fell in love with the game, but as all golfers know, I never really understood the almost mystical fascination of the game. The Legend of Bagger Vance takes a hard run at revealing some of the underlying forces. When someone loses or walks away from themselves, they often lose sight of their own purpose, who they actually are. This is book is ostensibly about golf, but moreover, I saw it as a book about being true to yourself, to your life, and the people in it.
This is a very good book. The feeling of being out in the open air, in nature, striving hard to relax into yourself is almost addictive. The character development, narrative device, plot, and just good storytelling brought me deep into the world of Rannulf Junah, Bagger Vance, and the world of Golf and Self, as seen through the eyes of the young Hardison Greaves. For most of the book first and last parts , it is an enthralling book that completely drew me in. I was on the links with them, watching the external, and more interestingly, the internal struggles.
I could see them, feel them, I was one of them. It distracted me from what I saw as the main theme, and pushed me back out of the pages into just reading a book. Despite what appeared to be a distracting departure, this book is well worth the read.
Thoroughly enjoyable, deeply introspective, and a strong reminder of the constant struggle with the adversity of life and trauma to retain — or find — your one, true Self. I hate seeing the movie before reading the book, but I saw this movie years ago-- so long ago that I'd forgotten the plot, or lack thereof.
I really enjoy Steven Pressfield's writing-- it glides smoothly down the page without drawing attention to itself or stalling. I would have enjoyed it more if the book contained less technical information about the game of golf.
I know that's stupid, because it's a golf book, but I did get a little bogged down and found my attention wandering when one of the I hate seeing the movie before reading the book, but I saw this movie years ago-- so long ago that I'd forgotten the plot, or lack thereof.
I know that's stupid, because it's a golf book, but I did get a little bogged down and found my attention wandering when one of the characters described a particular hole in depth. On the other side of the coin, the character of Bagger Vance has to be one of the most unique and fascinating in all of modern literature.
Is he God? Or is he the god of Golf? Or just a guardian angel? Or just a crazy old man? I found the premise for the story-- the mentor trying to convince the young talent not to quit golf-- a bit thin, but I do like the way it was told as a memory so that the edges are fuzzy. It made the whole thing much more relatable. The ending was strange, and I wish it had stopped at the end of the golf tournament, which was the best part of the entire book.
Overall, it's a solid three for me; if I knew anything about golf, it would have been a four. Although they were two completely different stories, this is one of those rare occasions The Shawshank Redemption comes to mind when the book and movie do not match but both are superbly told stories.
I wouldn't change either and I feel uplifted by the two. The book is far more supernatural and spiritual than the movie and given my own skepticism and atheism I was surprised to find that I enjoyed this fictional tale immensely. On previous occassions, I have tried reading books with similar th Although they were two completely different stories, this is one of those rare occasions The Shawshank Redemption comes to mind when the book and movie do not match but both are superbly told stories.
On previous occassions, I have tried reading books with similar themes and they've always fallen short. Until now, I chalked it up to my own personal doubts and agnosticism.
But now I know that if the story is good enough, I can let go of my unbelief and surrender to the story teller. That is a comforting feeling and in its own way, has a kind of spiritual virtue in and of itself which I would have denied even existed prior to discovering the genius of Steven Pressfield. I want more! Mar 10, Michael Tuggle rated it it was amazing Shelves: all-time-favorites.
One of my favorite books of all-time! It pains me that the cover has been changed because a lot of people will judge the book by the movie which was terrible. If they had stuck with early rumors and rolled with Morgan Freeman and Robert Redford in the main roles rather than trying to hook a young audience with Will Smith and Matt Damon who are great in other roles, they might have had a shot, but like a lot of bad movie adaptations this one will deter some people from reading the book.
Don't let One of my favorite books of all-time! Don't let it. There is a wonderful spirituality to "The Legend of Bagger Vance" that doesn't come through in the movie thanks Hollywood!
It's a beautiful book that's really well written. May 30, Phil Gerkin rated it it was amazing. Golf is a metaphor for life couched in Hindu tradition. It is written in the clear, plain-prose style that is both easy-to-read and beautiful.
There were times I found myself holding my breath at the prose. The religious focus evokes the central message of many religions while relying on specific metaphors from the Hindu faith.
This author won't presume to elucidate thematic messages, but rather, let readers learn from Junah and Harley and Michael and Irene and Beggar, himself. There is much to Golf is a metaphor for life couched in Hindu tradition. There is much to contemplate. Any five-star book should leave the reader a bit changed and inspired.
This book meets this requirement whether one enjoys golf or not. It is all about the metaphor. Oct 13, Alan rated it it was amazing Recommends it for: anyone. Life is about action; about following through. It is also the search for our authentic self, or if you're a golfer, for your authentic swing! If you've lost your authentic self, it can be found This book is based, in huge part, on the hindu scripture "the bhagavad gita" and has many spiritual, moral, and personal lessons to teach us.
Describing it doesn't do it justice. You have to read it for yourself to understand. Don't let the golf angle put you off. If you l Life is about action; about following through.
If you like triumphing over adversity, you will love this book. Jul 25, Andre rated it really liked it. I am not a fan of golf, but I appreciated and greatly like this book. This book could be about cabinet making or washing windows and it would still be a great read. Some people may object to the eastern mysticism, but I think that speaks more of them than this book.
Also, the movie was a two star effort with four star actors and this book is so much more. Please, do not let the movie stop anyone from reading the book. Sep 16, Justin rated it did not like it. This is one of those rare instances where I feel the movie is far better than the book. The underlying story of Vance is muddled and almost obnoxious in the book. I am glad whoever wrote the screenplay had the sense to see the overshadowed story there and trim out the rest. Mar 10, Joseph Cognard rated it it was amazing.
This would easily be my favorite book about golf if not for HP's little red book. This is another one of those book so much better than the movie to me. Though I like the movie this book had so much more depth especially about the stuff that main character was going through. Jun 18, Terrie rated it really liked it. Never thought I'd like a book with golf as it's plot, but this is such a lovely book.
The metaphor is wonderful and the story moves along so smoothy. Highly recommend. Loved this book--and I don't even like golf! There are no discussion topics on this book yet. Be the first to start one ». Readers also enjoyed.

I believe in the Muse. I believe that books and music exist before they are written and that they are propelled into material being by their own imperative to be born, via the offices of those willing servants of discipline, imagination and inspiration, whom we call artists. My conception of the artist's role is a combination of reverence for the unknowable nature of "where it all comes from" and a no-nonsense, blue-collar demystification of the process by which this mystery is approached.
In other words, a paradox. There's a recurring character in my books named Telamon, a mercenary of ancient days. Telamon doesn't say much. He rarely gets hurt or wounded.
